Its about a family called the grady's who have a curse which makes most of the grady kids turn into werewolves when they hit their teens. The only way to lift the curse is to make a bargain with a demon master called lord loss. The demon plays you at chess and if you win, the kid gets the curse lifted but you have to battle lord loss 1 on 1 in the demonata universe, if you loose lord loss sets his familiars onto you and you will die a brutal death. Anyway, Grubbs's (main character) sister has the curse and his parents have to go up against lord loss and they leave grubbs with his aunt as they dont want him killed if they failed. Grubbs thinks they are at a ballet but can sence that something is wrong, he sneaks back to his house and finds his dad hanging from the ceiling with his head ripped off and his sister ripped in half. The demons try to kill him and he escapes without knowing how, he is then brought into a mental hospital because no one believes his story then his uncle devish takes him to stay with him. His uncle is a part of an organisation of demon killers called the desciples, he is a powerful mage and teaches grubbs how to use it.
Anyway i am not really good at explaining things and this is a rough explaination of the start of book one, i do not want to explain any of the rest of the books as it is 1 series, if i explain another book you will get major spoilers lol.
Darren also wrote another series of books about vampires, it i about a kid who goes to a freak show and encounters a vampire, he is then forced to become his assistant (cba explaining it but this is the rought detail lol) There is a movie coming out which combines the first 3 books in this series, the movie is called cirque du freak and is getting made as we speak, this series was a lot better than the demonata and the movie should be amazing, ive been looking foward to it for years.
